🕯️ When to Use Explicit Direct Access in IFS

Explicit direct access is the most direct way to speak to a part. You name it, acknowledge it, and relate to it clearly — often when the client can’t.

You might say, “I’d like to speak directly to the part that’s feeling so angry right now — is that okay?” Or, “I can sense a protector that really wants to keep things under control — can I check in with it?”

You use explicit direct access when:•

  • The client is deeply blended and can’t separate enough to connect from Self.•

  • The system is chaotic or silent, and a part needs immediate attunement.•

  • You want to model Self-energy in real time so the part can feel it.

This isn’t bypassing the client; it’s stabilizing the field. The moment a part feels accurately seen, tension eases. It realizes it doesn’t have to fight to be heard.

Once calm returns, you can gently transition back: “It seems this part feels more settled now. Would it be okay if you spoke with it directly?”

Explicit direct access reminds every part that even in the storm, someone can meet it — clearly, compassionately, and without fear.
