🕯️ Generational Burdens in IFS

Generational burdens ripple through family systems like unseen tides — trauma that wasn’t healed becomes emotion that’s inherited.
They differ from legacy burdens in that they aren’t just beliefs or roles, but energetic imprints that live in the body and nervous system
.
A part might carry the hypervigilance of a grandmother who survived war.
Another might hold a deep fear of abandonment echoing through generations of loss.
These burdens often surface as anxiety, shame, or patterns we can’t explain — because they didn’t start with us.
In IFS, healing these burdens means bringing compassion not only to our own system, but to those who came before. A Self-led presence can reach back through time, saying, “You did what you had to do. You can rest now.”
As the burden releases, something beautiful happens: the system no longer confuses inherited pain with identity. It begins to live from the present, not the past — carrying forward wisdom, not wounding.
