As-Ṣamad (ٱلصَّمَدُ)The Self-Sufficient One, The Everlasting Refuge, The One upon Whom all depend
Pronounced: as-sa-MAD Root: ص-م-د (Ṣ-M-D), to turn toward, to depend upon, to seek refuge, to stand firm.
Original Invocation (Arabic Calligraphy):ٱلصَّمَدُ
Sacred Reflection
As-Ṣamad is the One who needs nothing, and upon whom everything needs.
He is the still center
in a universe of trembling beings.
He does not hunger.
He does not tire.
He does not weaken.
He does not break.
And because He lacks nothing,
He becomes the One you can lean on
without fear of collapse.
In Sufi knowing, As-Ṣamad is the Eternal Refuge, the place the soul turns
when every other door has closed,
when every support has failed,
when every part of you whispers,
“I have nowhere left to go…”
And then this Name rises,
quiet but immovable:
Come to Me.
I do not waver.
I do not disappear.
I do not run empty.
I am the fullness you return to
when the world drains you dry.
As-Ṣamad is not merely stability
.He is sufficiency.
He is completeness
.He is the One who stands
when all else collapses.
He is the sanctuary
that does not depend on your strength to hold.
He is the refuge
that does not close when you fail.
He is the One
who remains.
Parts Work Invitation
What part of you is tired of holding everything together?
The one whispering,
“If I stop, everything will fall apart…”
“If I rest, no one will catch me…”
“I have to be strong because no one else will…”
Let that part come into the presence of As-Ṣamad.
Let it feel the relief of a Love
that does not ask you to carry the world.
Let it hear:
“You were never meant to be self-sufficient.
You were meant to lean.
You were meant to rest.
You were meant to turn toward Me.”
Let this part soften its grip.
Let its shoulders drop.
Let it imagine, even for a breath,
what it would be like
to not be the one who holds everything.
To be held instead.
As-Ṣamad does not depend on you.
You depend on Him.
And that dependence
is not weakness.
It is worship.
It is return.
It is the soul remembering
it has a place to lay down its burdens
without fear of abandonment.
Let this part rest in the truth:
You do not have to be enough.
He already is.
