An elderly Sikh man sits cross-legged on a stone floor inside an ancient temple, eyes closed and hands pressed together in prayer. He wears simple white robes and a turban, his long grey beard resting against his chest. A small brass vessel, a bowl of offerings, and prayer beads lie beside him, while a single oil lamp glows softly in a niche in the weathered stone wall behind him, creating a quiet, reverent atmosphere.

Straight, Clear Meaning (Sikh-Accurate)

Countless are the realms, galaxies, and universes.

If someone tried to describe their limits, there would be no end.

Countless are the debates and stories about creation.

Countless are the forms and the beings who shape and carry life.

Countless are the lands of action where destiny unfolds.

Countless are the ways nourishment appears.

Countless are the expressions of love, devotion, virtue, and wisdom.

Guru Nanak concludes:

Through all these countless realms,

One Truth dwells within all.

Sacred Commentary

Devotional • Clear • Non-Didactic

Pauree 22 expands the mind until it dissolves into awe.

Guru Nanak lifts us from the human scale

and places us into the vastness of cosmic reality:

Countless realms.

Countless systems.

Countless ways life expresses itself.

Countless paths of devotion.

Countless forms of wisdom.

This Pauree is not meant to be understood.

It is meant to unmake the illusion

that the human mind can grasp the fullness of existence.

It humbles the intellect without shaming it.

It softens spiritual arrogance without condemning effort.

It opens the heart by showing how small we are, and how held we are within something immeasurable.

Guru Nanak’s message is simple and thunder-soft:

“You don’t need to know the boundaries of creation.

There are no boundaries to find.

Whatever worlds exist, seen or unseen, are permeated by One Presence.”

The Infinite is not far away.

It sits inside everything, including you.

The IFS Lens

Alignment with Self-energy • No Forcing Beliefs

Parts naturally try to understand reality:

  • A thinking part wants to map the universe.

  • A spiritual achiever wants to “get it right.”

  • A philosophical part wants certainty.

  • A young part fears the unknown.

Pauree 22 gently meets all of them:

You don’t need to hold the cosmos.

The cosmos already holds you.

This Pauree invites the system to feel something deeper than knowledge.

The calm that comes from not needing answers.

Self-energy thrives in spaciousness:

curiosity without demand,

awe without panic,

humility without collapse.

For parts that fear losing control, this teaching says:

“There is room for you inside a reality far greater than your burden.”

For parts that chase understanding, it says:

“You don’t have to grasp everything to be safe.”

For parts that long for transcendence, it says:

“You are already woven into the Infinite.”

Trauma-Informed Practice

Curiosity-Only • Non-Directive • All Responses Welcome

If it feels comfortable, let your body arrive in whatever way brings ease or steadiness.

Bring the essence of Pauree 22 close:

“There are countless realms, countless ways life unfolds,

and through all of it, one Presence abides.”

Let this idea rest beside you, lightly.

Notice what arises:

a sense of wonder,

a tightening,

a drifting

,a widening,

or nothing at all.

Every response is welcome.

Turn toward the part that responds first.

Not to shape it, only to accompany it.

You may explore softly:

“How does my system react to the idea of vastness?”

“What part of me wants certainty or control?

“What part feels eased by the reminder of something larger?”

If it feels safe, allow the part to express whatever is true for it,

through sensation, emotion, imagery, or silence.

No need to resolve anything.

Just presence.

This is the practice.

Closing Reflection

Poetic • Grounded • Inclusive

Pauree 22 stretches the heart beyond its usual walls.

It whispers:

You are not small in a diminishing way.

You are small in a beloved way,

like a drop the ocean knows by name.

Countless worlds turn.

Countless beings breathe.

Countless mysteries unfold.

And through all of it,

One Light lives at the center

of every pulse, every realm, every heart.

You do not need to understand infinity

to be held by it.

You already are.
