**Alt text:**
An elderly Sikh man with a white turban and long white beard sits cross-legged in meditation beside a gently flowing forest stream. He wears simple white robes, eyes closed, hands resting calmly in his lap. A small brass water vessel, a bowl of offerings, and prayer beads lie on the stone ledge beside him. Soft natural sunlight filters through trees, illuminating rocks and water, creating a serene, timeless, contemplative atmosphere.

Straight Meaning (Sikh-accurate)

Guru Nanak says:

Through deep listening, truth arises, contentment arises, and wisdom takes root.

Through listening, one receives the merit of sacred cleansing equivalent to the sixty-eight pilgrimage sites.

Through listening, honor comes, not from study alone, but from inward alignment.

Through listening, one begins to feel the Presence of the Divine within.

Those devoted to this listening blossom continually.

Through listening, suffering and inner wrongdoing fall away.

Sacred Commentary

This is the fourth and final Suniai pauree, the culmination of Guru Nanak’s teaching on inner listening.

Here, listening becomes transformative.

It births truth, not as a belief but as a lived integrity.

It brings contentment, that rare quietness where striving dissolves.

It awakens wisdom, the kind that cannot be memorized or borrowed, only embodied.

Guru Nanak reminds the seeker that ceremonial purification, pilgrimages, and outer achievements are shadows compared to the purification that comes from inward attunement.

Listening becomes the pilgrimage.

Listening becomes the sacred bath.

Listening becomes the temple where self-deception dissolves and authentic honor arises,

not the honor given by others,

but the dignity that grows when the soul is aligned with itself.

And again, as always in this cluster of paurees, he repeats the refrain:

True listening dissolves suffering and the karma of distortion.

Not because the listener becomes innocent,

but because the listener becomes open.

IFS Lens

In the IFS understanding, this pauree describes what happens when Self-energy meets the system with unhurried curiosity.

Truth emerges, not as a verdict, but as clarity rising from within.

Contentment becomes possible when protectors finally feel they don’t need to run or tighten.

Wisdom surfaces when exiles are no longer silenced or overwhelmed.

“Pilgrimage merit” mirrors the healing that happens internally when parts feel seen, a purification not of wrongdoing, but of burden.

“Honor” reflects the internal respect that grows when parts recognize Self as a trustworthy presence.

Feeling “the Divine within” parallels the moment when parts sense Self-energy’s leadership, steady, warm, spacious.

And suffering falls away the same way Guru Nanak describes,

not by force,

not by effort,

but by the gentle,

natural unfolding that happens when every part is allowed to exist without fear.

Trauma-Informed Practice (Curiosity Only)

As you sit with this pauree, notice what shifts, or doesn’t, inside your system.

You might explore:

  • Is there a part of me that longs for truth or clarity right now?

  • Is there a part that tenses around the idea of contentment?

  • How does my system respond to the idea of inner listening being its own purification?

  • Is there a part that hesitates to feel worthy of honor?

  • What sensations arise when I imagine feeling a Presence within?

If nothing arises, that is also wisdom.

If many parts speak at once, that is normal.

If it feels quiet or blank, that is allowed.

Your system knows how to move in its own timing.

This is the practice.

Closing Reflection

This pauree whispers that the deepest transformations don’t come from traveling outward, they come from turning inward with a listening heart.

Truth reveals itself like a shy guest.

Contentment settles like evening light on still water.

Wisdom unfurls like something that was always there, waiting for space.

May your listening become a sanctuary.

May your parts feel your presence as gently as the dawn.

And may this pauree remind you that every step toward inner hearing

is already a holy pilgrimage.
