Module 5 — The Five Indemonstrables and the Logical Paradoxes
Everyone has been on the losing end of an argument that felt rigged. The other person's reasoning moved fast, each step sounded fine, and the conclusion was something nobody sane would accept, and yet there was no obvious place to push back. The sense that a trick had been played was strong. The ability to say where it happened was missing. That gap, between feeling that reasoning has gone wrong and being able to point to the exact bad step, is the gap Chrysippus set out to close. His logic was not built to win debates. It was built to make the structure of reasoning so explicit that a bad move could be caught in the act and named.
The Five Indemonstrables
Chrysippus's starting point was a short list of argument forms so basic that their validity is not in question and does not need to be proved. He called them the indemonstrables, the arguments that cannot be demonstrated because there is nothing more obvious to demonstrate them from. They are the atoms of valid reasoning. There are five, and each is built from the connectives of ordinary speech: if, or, and not.
The first works from a conditional by affirming its if-part. If it rained, the street is wet. It rained. So the street is wet. Logicians later named this modus ponens, and it is the single most common move in all of reasoning.
The second works from a conditional by denying its then-part. If it rained, the street is wet. The street is not wet. So it did not rain. This one is modus tollens, the engine of every test that rules a theory out by checking its consequences.
The third works from a denial that two things hold together. The keys are not both in the drawer and on the hook. They are in the drawer. So they are not on the hook.
The fourth works from an either-or by affirming one side. Either the bill is due Monday or it is due Tuesday, and not both. It is due Monday. So it is not due Tuesday.
The fifth works from an either-or by eliminating. Either the report is in the inbox or in the sent folder. It is not in the inbox. So it is in the sent folder. This last form, reasoning by ruling options out until one remains, will matter again shortly.
These five are not meant to be impressive on their own. They are meant to be bedrock. Chrysippus's claim, and the part that took real genius, was that every valid argument, however long and tangled, can be broken down and shown to be nothing more than these five forms chained together. To prove it he added a set of higher rules, called the themata, that work like instructions for reducing any complicated argument step by step back to the indemonstrables. The details of the themata are among the casualties of the lost library and are only partly recoverable now. The ambition behind them is perfectly clear: to show that the whole of valid reasoning rests on a handful of moves simple enough that no one could seriously doubt them.
Valid vs True
There is a distinction hidden in those five forms that is worth dragging into the open, because missing it is the source of an enormous amount of bad thinking. The forms are about validity, not truth. An argument is valid when its conclusion really does follow from its premises, when the shape is sound. Whether the premises are actually true is a separate question entirely. A valid argument can be built from false premises and reach a false conclusion, and the reasoning is still valid, still correctly shaped. And, more dangerously, an argument can have true premises and a true conclusion and still be invalid, because the conclusion does not actually follow. Truth is about the world. Validity is about the form. Chrysippus's whole project was the study of form, of when a conclusion is forced regardless of content.
This is exactly where the most common reasoning trap lives, and the indemonstrables expose it cleanly. Compare two arguments. If it rained, the street is wet; it rained; so the street is wet. That is the first indemonstrable, and it is airtight. Now turn it around. If it rained, the street is wet; the street is wet; so it rained. This feels almost identical, and it is wrong. The street could be wet from a burst pipe, a hose, a passing street cleaner. Affirming the then-part gives no licence to work backward to the if-part. The mistake has a name, affirming the consequent, and once the shape is seen it becomes impossible to unsee. A great deal of persuasive but faulty reasoning, in advertising, in argument, in private worry at three in the morning, is this exact move dressed up: a true if-then, a true consequence observed, and an unearned leap back to a cause that was never the only possibility. The reason this is the usable core of Chrysippus's logic is simple. Learning the five valid shapes is also learning to recognize the convincing counterfeits that almost match them.
Chrysippus's Dog
The most charming thing Chrysippus ever said about logic involved a dog, and it has been retold for two thousand years. Picture a hunting dog following a scent. It comes to a place where three paths split off. It sniffs the first: nothing. It sniffs the second: nothing. And then, without bothering to sniff the third, it runs straight down it at full speed.
Chrysippus pointed at that dog and said it had just performed the fifth indemonstrable. The animal had reasoned, in effect: the quarry went down the first path, or the second, or the third; not the first; not the second; therefore the third. It is the eliminating form, ruling out options until one is left, carried out on four legs and a nose. The point Chrysippus drew from it is the deep one. Logic is not a human invention laid on top of thought. It is the shape that good reasoning takes wherever it happens, so plain and so basic that even an animal tracking dinner falls into it. The valid forms are not arbitrary rules agreed on by philosophers. They are the natural joints of inference itself.
The dog has kept philosophers arguing ever since, which is part of its charm. Some have taken the story to prove that animals genuinely reason. Others have taken it to prove the opposite, that if a dog can do it, then this kind of inference is mere instinct and nothing grand. Sextus Empiricus, who preserved the tale, was careful with his words and said only that the dog reasons in effect, as if it were using the fifth indemonstrable, leaving open whether anything like conscious logic runs behind the wet nose. The honest position is that the story was never really about dogs. It was Chrysippus's vivid way of insisting that the forms he had isolated were not a game. They were the bones of reasoning, and he was confident enough in that claim to go looking for them in an animal at a crossroads.
The Sorites (the Heap)
Chrysippus did not only build reasoning up. He also studied the places where it breaks, and he spent a great deal of effort, by the ancient accounts more than any logician before him, on a puzzle that still has no agreed solution. It is called the Sorites, from the Greek word for a heap, and it was inherited from an earlier logician named Eubulides.
It begins with something obvious. A single grain of sand is not a heap. And adding one grain to something that is not a heap surely cannot turn it into one, since one grain is far too small to make that kind of difference. But those two harmless-looking claims, put together and repeated, lead somewhere absurd. If one grain is not a heap, then two are not, because adding a single grain changed nothing. If two are not, then three are not, by the very same step. Run the move enough times and the conclusion is that ten thousand grains are not a heap, and neither is any number at all. The same trap runs in reverse: a million grains are clearly a heap, removing one still leaves a heap, and step by step the argument forces the verdict that one lone grain is a heap. Each individual step looks unarguable. The conclusion is plainly false. Something has gone wrong, and it is genuinely hard to say what.
The reason this is more than a parlor trick is that the world is full of vague words, words with no sharp boundary, and the same structure traps every one of them. There is no exact grain where sand becomes a heap, no exact hair where a head becomes bald, no exact minute where afternoon becomes evening. And the same shape drives a familiar pattern of self-defeat. One small purchase will not wreck the budget, which is true; but neither will the next, by identical reasoning, nor the one after that, and the logic of one more will not hurt walks a person grain by grain to a place no single step ever seemed to lead. The Sorites is the formal skeleton of every slippery slope.
Chrysippus's Strategy: Falling Silent
What did Chrysippus do about it. His answer was characteristically severe, and at first it sounds almost like a dodge. When someone walks a person through a Sorites, asking grain by grain, is this a heap, and this, and this, his advice was to stop answering before reaching the dangerous middle ground. Fall silent, he said. Go quiet well before the borderline, rather than keep nodding along into the trap.
This is not a refusal to think. It rests on a particular and rather modern view of what the puzzle reveals. On the reading most scholars now favor, Chrysippus held that there really is a fact about where a heap begins, a precise point where enough grains become enough, but that the point is impossible for anyone to know. Vagueness, on this account, is not a flaw in the world. It is a limit on what can be known about it. If there is a real but unknowable boundary, then the honest response in the borderline zone is to withhold judgment, to neither affirm nor deny, because any confident answer there would claim a knowledge no one possesses. Falling silent is the disciplined act of not asserting what cannot be known.
It should be said plainly that this is a strategy, not a cure. The Stoics classed the Sorites, along with the puzzle that follows, as insoluble, aporos, problems they could keep from being trapped by but could not make finally vanish. There is something fitting in the admission. The most rigorous logician of the ancient world met the heap, worked at it harder than anyone before him, and concluded that the wise move was to know exactly when to stop talking.
The Liar, Briefly
The companion puzzle, the one the Stoics also gave up as insoluble, is the Liar, and it can be stated in a single breath. A man says, I am lying. Is what he says true or false. If it is true, then he is lying, so it is false. If it is false, then he is not lying, so it is true. The sentence flips between true and false and will not settle on either, and there is no third option to escape into.
The Stoics did not treat this as a trick to wave away. It struck at something their whole logic depended on, the principle that every proposition is either true or false, with nothing in between. A sentence that can be neither, while looking like a perfectly ordinary statement, threatens the very foundation the indemonstrables were built on. Chrysippus reportedly wrote many books trying to contain it, and not one survives. What endures is the lesson the Liar teaches about the reach and the limits of language: that the rules for forming a correct sentence and the rules for a sentence being true or false are not the same rules, and language can produce grammatical, well-formed strings that the machinery of truth cannot process. It is a humbling discovery for a thinker devoted to making reasoning airtight, and it stands to Chrysippus's credit that he looked straight at the one place his own system could not fully close, named it insoluble, and kept working anyway.
