Around 334 to 262 BCE, a Phoenician merchant named Zeno of Citium was carrying a cargo of precious purple dye across the Mediterranean when his ship went down and took his entire fortune with it. Stranded and ruined in Athens, he wandered into a bookshop, fell for philosophy on the spot, and went on to found Stoicism, teaching from a public colonnade called the Painted Porch that gave the whole school its name. Out of that wreck came one question he spent the rest of his life answering, and it is the question this course is built around: when everything that can be taken from you has been taken, what is actually still yours?
This course teaches Zeno on his own terms, his ideas and his school alone, with no other philosophers or modern methods mixed in. It is written in plain, down-to-earth language anyone can follow, whether you have read the Stoics for years or this is your very first step toward them. It is not a dry academic survey, and it is not motivational hype; it is Zeno's actual thinking, laid out clearly enough that you can understand it and carry it into the way you see your own life. Each lesson gives you real teaching, true-to-life examples, and an honest account of both the brilliance of his ideas and the contradictions in the man who held them.
