🧠 Module 10 — The Z-Axis and Convergence

So far, finding a brainspot has been a matter of looking around a flat field: left or right, higher or lower, like locating a point on a wall. But that flat map leaves out a dimension everyone uses constantly without thinking about it. Depth. How near or far a thing is. The Z-axis is Brainspotting's name for that third dimension, and adding it turns a flat search into a fully three-dimensional one.

The third dimension: depth (the Z-axis)

In geometry, a point in space needs three numbers to pin it down: how far left or right, how far up or down, and how far near or far. Those three directions are often called the x, y, and z axes. The first two, left-right and up-down, make up the flat field the eyes scan in the usual setups. The z-axis is the one pointing straight toward and away from the face.

In practice, the z-axis is worked by moving the spot, usually a pointer, closer to the eyes or farther away. The direction of the gaze can stay exactly the same while the distance changes, and that change in distance, on its own, becomes part of the work. The brainspot, in other words, is not just somewhere on a flat plane. It also sits at a certain depth.

How distance changes intensity

The reason depth matters is that it has a direct effect on how strong the processing feels. Sliding the spot nearer or farther turns the intensity of the work up or down.

As a general tendency, bringing the spot closer amplifies the experience, making a feeling more immediate and intense, while moving it farther away softens and eases it. Distance becomes a kind of volume control. When something needs to be brought up and met more fully, the spot can be drawn in closer. When the work is becoming too much, backing the spot away takes some of the edge off. The same brainspot can be made to feel stronger or gentler simply by changing how far away it sits.

Three-dimensional Brainspotting

Put the flat field and the depth dimension together and the result is three-dimensional Brainspotting: working with direction and distance at the same time.

This gives a far finer level of control than direction alone. Direction, the left-right and up-down position, settles where the spot is and what it connects to. Depth, the near-far position, settles how strongly that connection is felt. Adjusting both together lets the work be tuned in two ways at once, locating the right material and then dialing in the right intensity for meeting it. It is the difference between a single flat dial and a full mixing board.

Convergence Therapy (the vagus-nerve angle)

One particular use of the near dimension has grown into its own named approach: Convergence Therapy.

Convergence is what the eyes do when they turn inward to focus on something very close, the way both eyes angle toward the bridge of the nose when looking at a fingertip held near the face. Convergence Therapy deliberately draws the eyes inward toward a near point, and in doing so it aims to engage the body's calming machinery through a real physical link between the eyes and the nervous system.

That link runs through the vagus nerve, the long nerve at the heart of the body's rest-and-calm system, the part of the nervous system responsible for slowing things down and settling the body. There is a known reflex, called the ocular-cardiac reflex, in which stimulating the eyes can actually slow the heart rate by way of the vagus nerve. Convergence Therapy works with that connection on purpose, using the inward turn of the eyes to nudge the nervous system toward a calmer, more regulated state. The aim is steadiness and settling rather than stirring something up. As with much of Brainspotting, the broad physical connection here is real and recognized, while the precise degree to which it can be harnessed for healing is something the method works with in practice and continues to explore.

Why depth matters (titrating intensity)

The deepest value of the z-axis is that it gives a way to titrate the work. To titrate means to adjust the dose carefully, a little at a time, the way a dial fine-tunes a setting rather than flipping it all the way on or off.

For someone who needs the work gentler, the spot can be kept farther away and eased back whenever intensity rises too high. For someone ready to go further, the spot can be brought in closer to deepen the contact. This makes depth especially valuable for managing overwhelm, because it offers a smooth, moment-to-moment way to keep processing inside a range a person can actually tolerate. Rather than a feeling being simply on or off, the z-axis lets it be turned up and down by degrees, which is often exactly what keeps deep work both effective and bearable.

How does moving a spot closer or farther change the feeling?

Is closer always more intense and farther always calmer?

Brainspotting treats this as a general tendency rather than an ironclad rule. For most people, in most moments, closer brings a feeling up and farther eases it, which is why distance makes such a handy intensity control. But people vary, and the same person can respond a little differently from one issue or one day to the next. The reliable move is not to assume a fixed rule but to notice how the intensity actually shifts as the distance changes, and to use whichever direction settles the work where it needs to be.

Is Convergence Therapy the same as crossing your eyes?

Not quite. Convergence is the natural inward turn the eyes make when focusing on something close, which is gentle and comfortable, unlike the forced, strained look of deliberately crossing the eyes. Convergence Therapy uses that easy inward focus toward a near point, held only as long as it stays comfortable and never pushed to the point of strain. The goal is to engage a calming reflex, not to hold an uncomfortable eye position.

Does the Z-axis call for any special equipment?

No special gear is needed. The same kind of pointer used to locate a spot is simply moved nearer to or farther from the eyes, so depth is worked with the tools already in hand rather than anything extra. The whole z-axis dimension is really just a matter of changing distance, which any steady, movable target can manage.
