Module 5 — The Problem of Induction and Causation
On a pool table, the cue ball rolls across the felt, strikes a red ball, and the red ball rolls away. Nothing in the world seems more obvious. The first ball made the second one move. Anyone watching knows it, expects it, would be astonished if it failed to happen. Cause and effect at its plainest, repeated a thousand times a night in a thousand bars.
David Hume looked very hard at exactly this kind of scene and found something missing. Not missing in a way anyone notices at first, but missing all the same, and once it is pointed out it opens a crack that runs under nearly everything a person claims to know about the world. His question was disarmingly simple. When the first ball strikes the second, what does an observer actually see? And from what is seen, what can honestly be known? The answer Hume gives is one of the most consequential arguments in the history of philosophy, and it begins with a confession about how little the eye really delivers.
What the Senses Actually Show
Hume's favorite example of cause and effect is the collision of two balls, chosen because it is as clear a case as anything could be. So it is worth slowing the collision down and asking what an honest observer truly perceives, moment by moment.
Slowed down, a single collision contains only a few things anyone can actually perceive:
The first ball in motion, rolling across the felt.
The contact, the two balls meeting at a point, touching in space and at an instant in time.
The order, the first ball's motion coming before the second ball's, never after.
And then the second ball moves off. That is the whole of it: one thing, a touch, then another thing.
What is nowhere in that sequence is the causing itself. No observer ever sees a power passing from the first ball into the second, no force, no invisible thread, no necessity that binds the one event to the other and makes the second have to follow. The eye catches the two motions and the contact between them. It never catches the connection.
Watching the collision a hundred times changes the tally by exactly one item. It adds the constant conjunction, the plain fact that this kind of event has always, in experience, been followed by that kind. But constant conjunction is only repetition, and repetition shows nothing the first instance did not. The hundredth collision presents the same motion, the same touch, the same succession as the first, merely once more. The connection is no more visible on the hundredth viewing than it was on the first.
This is the first crack, small but fatal. The idea at the very center of cause and effect, the idea of a necessary connection, a genuine must linking cause to effect, answers to nothing the senses ever actually present. Put it through Hume's own test, the demand that every real idea trace back to some impression: there is no impression here of necessity, only of sequence. Which raises a question that will not go away. If the must is not in what is seen, where does it come from?
The Argument, Step by Step
The trouble runs deeper than a missing impression. Hume builds it into a tight argument, and following the steps is worth the effort, because each one looks reasonable and the destination is staggering.
Every belief that reaches past what is presently seen or remembered rests on cause and effect. To expect the red ball to move, to expect bread to nourish, to expect a tomorrow at all, is to run a causal inference from something present to something not yet observed.
This inference is not a matter of pure logic. Nothing about the cue ball, examined on its own, contains the red ball's motion. A mind meeting fire for the very first time, with no past to draw on, could not deduce that it burns; the effect is an entirely separate event, and there is no contradiction in imagining the fire doing nothing at all. So causal inference is not a relation of ideas, and cannot be proved the way a theorem is.
So the inference must rest on experience instead. The only reason anyone expects fire to burn is that fire has burned every time before. Past experience of constant conjunction is doing all the work.
But experience only ever reports the past. To carry its lessons into the future, the inference needs one more assumption, almost always left unspoken: that the future will resemble the past, that the course of nature runs uniform. Without that bridge, no amount of past burning says anything about the next flame.
And that bridge cannot itself be proved by reasoning. A future unlike the past involves no contradiction; a world that changes its habits tomorrow is strange but perfectly conceivable. So the uniformity of nature is no relation of ideas.
Nor can it be established by experience without arguing in a circle. To say that nature will stay uniform because it always has is to assume the very thing in question, using past uniformity to vouch for future uniformity. The argument leans on the conclusion it is trying to reach.
The result is unavoidable and severe. There is no proof, of either kind, that the future will resemble the past. And so every inference from experience, every causal expectation, the entire engine of science and ordinary life, rests on an assumption that reason can neither demonstrate nor confirm.
This is the problem of induction, and it is worth being clear about how radical it is. Hume has not found a flaw in some particular piece of reasoning. He has shown that the whole practice of learning from experience, the thing every science and every sane life depends on, has no foundation in reason at all. The cue ball will move the red ball. Hume agrees that it will. He simply denies that anyone can prove it, or even rationally justify the confidence, and he turns out to be right.
The Idea of Necessary Connection
If reason does not supply the connection, and the senses do not present it, the idea of necessary connection still has to come from somewhere, because people plainly have it. Everyone feels the must. Hume's account of its true origin is the turning point of the whole argument, and it is unexpected.
The connection, he argues, is real, but it does not live in the billiard balls. It lives in the mind. After the eye has watched one kind of event followed by another again and again, the mind undergoes a quiet change. It forms a habit. Now, on seeing the cue ball roll toward the red, the mind is carried automatically, with no choice and no reasoning, to expect the red to move. That inner pull, the felt determination of the mind to pass from the one idea to the other, is the only necessity anywhere in the scene. And it is that very feeling, Hume claims, that is the impression behind the idea of necessary connection.
The conclusion is striking. The necessity a person seems to see binding cause to effect out in the world is in truth a feeling produced inside the observer by long repetition, and then, as Hume vividly puts it, spread by the mind back out onto the objects, as though the must were a property of the balls rather than a habit of the watcher. Causation, as it is ordinarily imagined, is partly a projection. The regular succession is genuinely out there. The glue that seems to hold it together is supplied by the human mind.
Custom and Habit
It would be easy to read all this as pure demolition, as though Hume had proved that no one knows anything and that science is a confidence trick. That reading is wrong, and Hume takes pains to block it. Having shown that reason does not ground causal belief, he turns to what does, and his answer is not despair but a humbler foundation.
That foundation is custom. Custom, Hume says, is the great guide of human life. The mind is so built that repeated experience produces expectation automatically, the way a hand learns a skill without consulting a rulebook. Belief, on this account, is not a conclusion that reason arrives at. It is closer to an instinct, a natural feeling triggered in a creature that has met the same pattern enough times. When the present sight of one ball enlivens the expectation of the other moving, that vivid, compelling expectation simply is belief. It is something felt, not something proved.
This is the heart of why Hume is not the destroyer of science he is sometimes mistaken for. He never says that causal reasoning should be abandoned, or that the next flame might as well be expected to freeze. He says the opposite. Nature has wisely not left something as vital as expectation to the slow and fragile workings of argument; it has planted in every mind an instinct that runs ahead of proof and serves a creature far better than reason alone ever could. The scientist tracking constant conjunctions is doing exactly the right thing. What Hume has changed is not the practice but the story told about it. The ground under science is not pure reason. It is human nature. How a person might live wisely with that fact is a thread the final lesson of this course takes up.
The New Hume Question
Before leaving the argument, honesty requires flagging a genuine dispute among Hume's readers, one still argued over today. It turns on a single question: when Hume says the necessity is in the mind and not in the objects, is he denying that real causal powers exist in nature, or only denying that anyone can know them?
On the traditional reading, Hume is saying there is nothing more to causation than what he has described. Out in the world there is only regular succession, one thing constantly followed by another, plus the habit of expectation in the mind. Talk of hidden powers and forces in nature is, on this view, talk of nothing; causation simply is constant conjunction. This is the Hume most textbooks present, the great reducer who shrank cause and effect down to mere regularity.
A newer reading, advanced by several serious scholars over recent decades and known as the New Hume, points to the many places where Hume speaks of nature's secret powers and ultimate springs as though they were genuinely real, merely hidden from human view. On this reading Hume is not denying that real connections hold the world together. He is making a more careful and humbler claim: that such powers, if they exist, lie forever beyond the reach of human ideas, since no impression of them ever arrives. The necessity would be unknowable, not unreal.
The dispute is not settled, and it is not trivial, since the two Humes leave rather different philosophies behind. This course flags it rather than pretending the matter is closed. What is not in dispute, on either reading, is the part that changed philosophy forever: that the necessary connection, real or not, is something no human being ever observes, and that belief in cause and effect is the work of custom rather than reason.
Why It Still Bites
None of this is a museum piece. The problem Hume found sits inside the most ordinary trust a person places in the world.
Devon has driven the same bridge on his commute for eleven years. It has held every single morning, thousands of crossings without a tremor, and so he drives onto it today without a flicker of hesitation. Asked why he is sure it will hold, he will say, reasonably, that it always has. That answer feels like bedrock. But it is exactly the inference Hume took apart. The bridge's past holding is a fact about the past; the belief that carries Devon across is a belief about this morning, and the only thing bridging the two is the assumption that the future will go on resembling the past. Devon cannot prove that assumption, and neither can anyone else. What actually carries him over is not a proof he has worked out but a habit nature has built into him, the same custom that carries every creature through a world it cannot fully justify trusting. And it is, on the whole, a good thing he does not stop for the proof, because there is none to be had, and the bridge is almost certainly fine.
That is the strange comfort buried in Hume's result. The lack of a rational foundation changes nothing about how anyone must live, because the instinct that stands in for reason is doing its job well. Still, the problem refused to stay solved, and the most famous response in all of philosophy came from a reader it jolted awake. Immanuel Kant said that recalling Hume on causation interrupted his dogmatic slumber, and he set out to rescue cause and effect from Hume's skepticism by arguing that causation is not something the mind reads off the world at all, but a structure the mind itself brings to every possible experience. Whether that reply succeeds, and exactly how it works, is the great subject of the Kant course in this series. Hume had handed the next century its problem. The cue ball moves the red ball, as it always has, and the deepest question in modern philosophy is why anyone is entitled to be sure.
