Two adults sit facing each other in elegant upholstered chairs on a sunlit terrace, engaged in a calm, attentive conversation. A small table with soft pink flowers rests between them, with tall greenery, pale stone columns, distant mountains, and water in the background. The image conveys thoughtful communication, deep listening, collaboration, and respectful dialogue for a Motivational Interviewing course.

Welcome to the Motivational Interviewing (MI) Course

Welcome, and thank you for being here. This is a free, plain-language course on Motivational Interviewing, usually shortened to MI, one of the most respected and widely used approaches to helping people change. It is taught here as the real thing, grounded in the work of its originators, William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick, and cleared of jargon so that any curious adult can genuinely understand it and use it. This is not a watered-down summary. It is the actual method, the same spirit and skills a thousand-dollar professional training would cover, told in a way that makes sense to ordinary people living ordinary lives.

Who This Course Is For

The course is written for anyone who finds themselves in conversations about change, which is to say very nearly everyone. You do not have to be a therapist or counselor to get a great deal from it. It is for parents and partners and friends, for people in helping roles of every kind, for anyone fascinated by how real change actually happens, and for anyone who would like to meet their own stuck places with a little more skill and a little less self-criticism. It is also for people currently working with an MI-trained therapist who want to understand, from the inside, what their therapist is doing and why.

How the Course Works

The course is built in three parts. Orientation lays the groundwork for true beginners, what MI is and the two ideas that make it work, and anyone already comfortable with the basics is welcome to skip ahead. Core Teachings is the heart of the course, the underlying spirit and the practical skills, taught one clear piece at a time. The Closing gathers everything into a single way of seeing that only comes into view once the rest is in place.

Each lesson stands on its own and takes roughly eight to ten minutes to read. Every one teaches something usable, a skill, a tool, or a way of listening that can be tried right away, and ends with a simple Motivational Interviewing practice to carry into real conversations. Lessons can be read straight through or dipped into one at a time. Use the outline below to jump to whichever lesson you are on.
